Celebrating Staff LogoEvery week we celebrate SMCDSB staff members who have been recognized by a parent, student or colleague.

This week we are celebrating Caleigh Laughlin, a special Caleigh Laughlin education resource teacher (SERT) at St. Monica’s Catholic School. Caleigh was nominated by a colleague who said:

“Caleigh is truly in it for the kids! Not only is she an amazing SERT she is also a great mentor to the staff in supporting them personally and professionally. She builds strong relationships with the students she works with and communicates with parents regularly to ensure that the parents and school are effectively working in partnership.

Caleigh recognizes the challenges that face our students and steps up to support them, whether it be by providing them with a quiet space to work when they can't cope or by providing them with a snack if they are hungry. Caleigh took the lead and started a morning breakfast club to support the school, serving well over 40-50 students daily. As well, she has stepped in to actively coach, providing the kids with yet more opportunities to find their place and find their voice.

She truly is an inspiration and deserves a pat on the back for all the extra time that she dedicates to the school. Thank you, Caleigh for all that you do!”

Chris Ashford-SmithThis week we are also celebrating Chris Ashford-Smith, a teacher at The Good Shepherd Catholic School. Chris was nominated by a parent who said:

“Mr. Ashford-Smith has taught both of my boys. My oldest was going through a hard time and Chris went above and beyond the teacher role to help him. He engages the students. He genuinely seems to love teaching and cares about the students. My younger son improved by leaps and bounds while in his class. When the youngest graduated, my oldest chose to wait and then wade through a sea of people to get to the other side of the church to say hello to Mr. A. That is a testament to how much he is adored. I am sure it would not be hard to find many others to testify to this. I think he should be considered for teacher of the year as well.”

Finally, we are celebrating Helen Laferriere, a teacher at Helen Laferriere Our Lady of Grace Catholic School. Helen was nominated by a colleague who said:

“Helen is an amazing person and teacher. I have had the privilege of knowing Helen for the past 17 years. During that time I have worked with her when doing my co-op placement, when I was a Tutor in the Classroom, supply teacher, and now a permanent teacher. Helen is always there to provide guidance and support, share resources, or give a hug at the end of a long day. Helen is an amazing teacher who goes above and beyond for her students. She creates a safe and loving classroom environment and is adored by her students. We are so blessed to have Mrs. Laferriere at OLG!”

We would like to thank Caleigh, Chris, and Helen for their commitment to Catholic education at our board.
