School Within a College (SWAC)

What is SWAC?

  • School Within a College (SWAC) programs is a unique opportunity for select SMCDSB students

  • It comprises secondary school courses & college dual credit courses delivered entirely on a college campus.

  • Locations: 

  • Georgian College Barrie (PET, JOA, SJO, PFO, HTR, STS) Sem 1 & 2
  • Georgian College Midland (STH & PFO) Sem 2 only

Program Details:

  • Students must attend 4 days a week at Georgian College (Barrie Campus)

  • Students will attend classes four days a week on the college campus; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM to 1PM. Fridays are set aside for meetings, one-on-one support, co-op placement visits, etc.

  • This is a unique and special learning opportunity – good attendance, participation and fulfilling class requirements is necessary in order to remain in the program. 

  • SMCDSB counselor on campus once a week

  • Transportation:  Students will be transported to Georgian Campus via Lynx or city bus.

  • Each semester, students can take 2 dual credits, 1-2 common high school courses as a class, and will complete their remaining credits through credit recovery or co-operative education. 

  • Dual credit is a course in which you receive a college and high school credit at the same time - this course is taught by college faculty and supported by an SMCDSB teacher. 

  • SWAC participants are full-time students with the SMCDSB and follow the board’s school year calendar (holidays and PA days). However, they will also be considered part-time college students. College attendance policies & code of conduct will apply. 

Potential Candidates:

Students will be chosen using the following eligibility requirements:

  • Students must be a minimum of 17 years of age, 

  • College capable (successfully completed college level grade 11/12 courses), 

  • Have a minimum of 20 credits for the full academic year & 24 credits for a single semester,

  • Students must be registered at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School, St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School, St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School or Holy Trinity Catholic High School and be referred to the program by the Student Success Team
