Become a Catholic School Trustee!


Are you interested in making a difference in Catholic education in your area? Consider becoming a Catholic school trustee with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB). 

The next municipal and school board election is on Monday, October 26, 2026. Candidate nominations are open from May 1 to August 21, 2026.  The new Board of Trustees will serve from November 15, 2026 to November 14, 2030. 

How Can I Run as a School Trustee?

Trustee jurisdictions may cross municipal boundaries. Interested candidates will submit their nominations to their local municipality office. What Qualification Do I Need to be a Catholic School Trustee?

In order to be a Catholic School Trustee, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen

  • Be a Roman Catholic

  •  Be 18 years of age or older

  • Be a resident within the jurisdiction of the Board

  • Be a supporter of the Board – see our Tax Designation Form

  • Not be an employee of any district school board or school authority in Ontario

  • Not be a clerk, deputy clerk, treasurer or deputy treasurer of a municipality within the jurisdiction of the Board

  • Not be a Senator, MP or MPP

  • Not otherwise be disqualified from office


Key Dates


  • May 1– August 21, 2026 (before 2 pm) – Candidates can file nominations  

  • August 21, 2026 (before 2 pm) – Final Day for Withdrawal of Candidacy

  • October 26, 2026 – Voting Day

  • November 15, 2026 – Board of Trustees’ Term of Office Begins
