SMCDSB Honours Truth and Reconciliation Week

SMCDSB Honours Truth and Reconciliation Week
Posted on 09/29/2021

This year, September 27th - October 1st is recognized nationally as Truth and Reconciliation Week, and September 30th as Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is a meaningful time to demonstrate the values we hold dear as a Catholic learning community.

Across the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, staff and students will take part in important conversations and activities that align with our week’s theme - Call to Action 63 iii - Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30. Canadians are encouraged to wear orange to raise awareness and honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

This year, we’re also honoured to have Bentwood Boxes in each school and Board location. These unique boxes are traditionally used by First Nation Peoples to store precious possessions. Across Simcoe Muskoka Catholic, these beautiful boxes are being used to encourage intercultural understanding through dialogue related to truth, healing and reconciliation.

We invite staff, students and families to share prayer offerings or reconciliation intentions through the SMCDSB LINK on our website. We hope our collective voices will provide us with an opportunity to learn from and with one another.
