In light of the dramatic and painful events of recent days in the United States, we invite you to join us in prayer:

God of every nation and people, of every language and culture: we are broken-hearted by the violent deaths of so many African American men and women in recent days and, as we witness the rightful anger of so many people, we are forced to confront the reality of injustice, racism and discrimination in our societies.

Pour out your Spirit upon those who are struggling and in grief, who are furious and who cry out loudly for change. Help us to acknowledge their pain and to honestly examine our own hearts and attitudes. Unite us as brothers and sisters in Christ, equal in dignity and worthy of love and respect. Give us courage, that we may stand up for those who are mistreated or marginalized, who are neglected or abused, and may we add our voices and our influence to efforts to change our society for the better. Give us eyes to see others as you see them, and to live out each day the values of your kingdom. Give us wisdom, and commitment, and peace.

We ask this in your name, Jesus our Lord. Amen.
