Government Seeking Feedback on Service Animals in Schools

Government Seeking Feedback on Service Animals in Schools
Posted on 04/24/2019

On April 4, 2019 the provincial government launched a public consultation on service animals in schools. The Minister of Education with the support of Bill 48, the Safe and Supportive Classrooms Act, 2019 amends the Education Act so that policies and guidelines respecting service animals in schools can now be established.

All school boards, families and students are encouraged to provide feedback on the topic of service animals in schools and classrooms. A draft Policy/Program Memorandum (PPM), School Board Policies on Service Animals is now open for consultation.

The draft PPM is intended to provide direction to school boards in developing our own policies on service animals within our schools.  The goal of the Ministry is to have a more fair, consistent and transparent process for families when making requests for service animals to accompany their children to school.
