Dalton Bown, a Grade 10 student from St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School in Barrie, recently showcased his technology skills at the Skills Canada competition in Winnipeg, Manitoba. From May 31 to June 3rd, 2017 Dalton competed in the Technology Sector of IT Office Software Application category and participated in some of the most rigorous challenges to date.

The two day national competition included six hour days and four challenges in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and finally the most complicated Powerpoint replication seen in a long time. Bown was competing in the secondary division and completing the same tasks as post-secondary students. Although he didn’t come home with a medal this year, Dalton valued his involvement saying, “It was such a great experience - I want to come back again!”

daltonDalton’s accomplishments leading up to this event are nothing short of incredible. He first had to compete at his school level - winning first place at St. Peter’s, allowing him to advance to the Ontario Skills competition in Toronto. On May 3, against 27 other students across the province, he won the gold medal in his category - securing a place at nationals.

St. Peter’s principal Heinrich Bebie is very impressed with Dalton’s accomplishments and looks forward to supporting him and other Skills participants in the world qualifying year next year. Melissa Oliver, one of St. Peter’s coaches, stated, “I am so proud of Dalton for taking the risk to compete on a national stage. The Skills competition is a fantastic opportunity for young people to showcase their skills in 74 various trades from Automotive, Robotics, Animation, Graphic Design, to Plumbing, Culinary, Aesthetics and Carpentry. Next year’s St. Peter’s team will be one to watch. We have had the taste of Nationals in 2015 and again this year - we want to make this an annual win!”
