Every week we celebrate SMCDSB staff members who have been recognized by a parent, student or colleague.

This week we are celebrating Syla MacMillan a teacher at St. John Vianney Catholic School. Syla was nominated by a student who said:

“Mrs. Mac gives great advice and is always encouraging. I told her that I didn't

Syla MacMillan

want to try out for the high school basketball team because I was scared I wasn't going to make it. She assured me that I'm an amazing athlete and I'm very coachable. While talking with Mrs. Mac, she told me that many girls stop playing sports in high school. After our conversation, I thought about everything she told me. Because of Mrs. Mac's encouragement and belief in me, I am motivated to continue with sports next year. Mrs. Mac is a great inspiration!”

This week we are also celebrating Krista Wirsta, an educational assistant at St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic School. Krista was nominated by a colleague who said:

Krista Wirsta“Krista is an incredible educational assistant who is always ready and willing to help in any way that she can with any student. Notably, she has done an amazing job working with a student by motivating him to stay on track through the use of a reward chart based on her students' special interest- stop signs! She is also working on and is having huge success with her students in regards to communication and the students using their words to identify the staff they are speaking to and what they would like or need from that staff, as well as learning how to express when they need help. Krista has been a ray of sunshine here at SJB and we are so lucky to have such an empathetic, caring, and fun member of our team!”

This week we also celebrate Stephanie Palacios-Valdes, a teacher at Holy Cross Catholic School.  Stephanie was nominated by a colleague who said:Stephanie Palacios-Valdes

“Stephanie is a hardworking, caring, and compassionate educator who is a valuable member of our school team. Stephanie goes above and beyond to support our school. She is always willing to help organize events at our school like the book fair, volunteering her time to support sporting events/ teams, and organizing staff events. Thank you Stephanie for always going above and beyond to support our school community.”

We would like to thank Syla, Krista and Stephanie for their commitment to Catholic education at our board.
