Every week we celebrate SMCDSB staff members who have been recognized by a parent, student or colleague.
This week we are celebrating Arlene Merkely, a vice principal at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. Arlene was nominated by a colleague who said:
“Arlene recently moved from head of Guidance to VP at St. Joe’s this year and brings her commitment to the school community in the new role. Her strong presence in the school shows her dedication to everyone in the building. Arlene has worked on educational opportunities for staff and students, particularly with experiential learning development involving Indigenous teachings, Making Tracks initiatives and the canoe build at St. Joseph's this past Fall. These inclusive events have been very successful, providing space for a variety of students within our school, allowing student’s work to shine, and giving teachers chances for learning and curriculum development. Arlene genuinely cares about the students and staff and that is apparent in her visibility in the halls and in her check-ins with those who may need extra support. St. Joe’s is blessed to have Arlene as a Vice Principal!”
This week we are also celebrating Anna Bandiera, office administrator at St. Monica’s Catholic School. Anna was nominated by a parent who said:
“Whether you go into the school or call, Anna is usually the first person to greet you. She is friendly and wonderful with the kids. She is very compassionate and dedicated to her job, often there very early and late to leave. My kids always enjoy going to the office to visit her. She goes the extra mile to get you an answer when you have questions.”
This week we are also celebrating Laura Baynton, a teacher at St. Monica’s Catholic School. Laura was nominated by a parent who said:
“Laura is a wonderful educator who dedicates a great time to her lesson plans so that it is fun and enjoyable for the kids. She finds creative ways to teach and get the children involved. She also believes getting them outside to learn is important. My daughter adores Laura in the kindergarten class, she always brags once she gets home that Ms. Baynton taught me this today. Thanks for all you do!”
We would like to thank Arlene, Anna and Laura for their commitment to Catholic education at our board.
