On Friday, June 10, the Town of Penetanguishene hosted the Champlain Legacy of Friendship. The event included educational activities, music and demonstrations to commemorate Champlain’s legacy.

Kendra Moreau, Grade 8 student from St. Ann’s CS in Penetanguishene, read in French to hundreds of people at the event. Her reading was seamlessly delivered as the unveiling of Samuel de Champlain’s monument and marked the official closing of the 400th anniversary of French presence in Ontario.

Kendra was the only student amongst many dignitaries, including the Minister of France, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, president of our local MNO, as well as many Huron-Ouendat people from Québec.

Also worthy of mention, Mackayla

Beauchamp, a second student from St. Ann’s Catholic School, was one of the drummers in the Métis Womens’ Drumming group, who performed several songs at the ceremony.

Please join us in congratulating Kendra and Mackayla!
