First Nation, Métis and Inuit youth represent the fastest growing demographic in Canada.  The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada sheds light on historic inequities that continue to impact overall student well-being and achievement.  The TRC’s Calls to Action in addition to Ontario’s renewed commitment to equity highlights the important role of provincial school boards and schools….

"To achieve an equitable and inclusive school climate, school boards and schools will work to ensure that all members of the school community feel safe, comfortable, and accepted.  We want all staff and students to value diversity and to demonstrate respect for others and a commitment to establishing a just, caring society."
- Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy

In the fall of 2009, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board was one of 72 boards in the province to begin the process of launching Voluntary and Confidential Self-Identification for students of First Nation, Métis and Inuit ancestry (K-12).

Data collected through the Voluntary Self-Identification is used for statistical purposes to identify areas of need, assist with planning and program evaluation in the development of leading practices.

Students under Education Services (Tuition) Agreement are still required to self-identify under the Voluntary Self-Identification process for their data to be included - if they/their families wish to participate.
