EQAO Results Released for SMCDSB

September 20, 2017 - BARRIE, ON: Today, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released its province-wide testing results for schools and school boards. The results for the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) are as follows:

  • Grade 3 reading - 68% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Grade 3 writing - 69% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Grade 3 mathematics - 55% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Grade 6 reading - 78% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Grade 6 writing - 76% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Grade 6 mathematics - 40% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Grade 9 applied mathematics - 39% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Grade 9 academic mathematics - 76% meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test - 77% of first-time eligible students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard

  • Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test - 49% of previously eligible students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard


The Ministry of Education recently announced widespread changes to the curriculum as well as a review of how student learning is assessed, which includes a reexamination of EQAO testing in the province. Students across Ontario are consistently scoring below the provincial standard in math, especially at the Grade 6 level.


“Our board welcomes this review because we know that our students and staff work extremely hard all year, in every subject area, and EQAO results don’t always accurately reflect that effort,” said Brian Beal, Director of Education. “We have implemented strategies focussed on improving math skills for our students and still, not unlike other schools and boards across Ontario, the percentage of students achieving below the provincial standard is higher than we would like. This province-wide downward trend is not a coincidence and perhaps speaks to other issues with EQAO testing.”

“I do think it is extremely important for parents, students and staff to understand that EQAO is only one tool we use to measure student outcomes,” said Beal. "In addition, the vast majority of our students who are currently not meeting the provincial standard are very close to where they need to be - that is, they are at the high end of level 2 and approaching the provincial standard (level 3).”
